4 Important Questions to Ask a Senior Living Facility

Finding the right senior care home in Vancouver (or anywhere) can be tough, especially if you’re new to the process. The overwhelming number of local senior living facilities can be enough to make your head spin. All of them will make the same promise to take care of your loved ones.

However, how can you be sure if they’ll truly follow through on this promise? The good news is that vetting a prospective senior living facility is a relatively straightforward process.

By asking the right questions, you can ultimately make the right decision in choosing the right senior living facility. So let’s break down four important questions to ask a senior living home.

Question 1: What are your amenities like?

Quality senior living facilities take pride in having the best amenities possible for their guests. Some have swimming pools, massage parlors, gyms, hair dressers, and lots of other fun activities that your loved ones can take part in to live their best life!

Usually when you’re conducting a search, you’re going to be overwhelmed about the number of amenities offered. This is why it’s important to bring along your loved one and have them ask questions about amenities that are important to them.

Having a swimming pool is great, but if it’s not important to your loved one, then you could be wasting your time on that home. Your final decision should rest on how comfortable your senior family member or friend is in the facility.

Question 2: Can you tell me about your staff?

A senior living facility should keep close tabs on all of their staff. In fact, they should be able to tell you everything about particular employees and how well they work with guests. They should also be able to talk to you about the specific nursing staff, primary care doctors, specialty doctors, and hospice care teams that come and go from the facility.

Watch out for red flags that can include facility staff acting mum about particular employees. If you are feeling any bad vibes in a senior living facility, it’s always best to follow your gut instinct rather than regret it later.

Question 3: What is your reputation in the community?

This is another important question you should ask. How has your reputation fared over the years? Have you faced any lawsuits? Do you have any active complaints from previous guests?

How well known is your facility among your competitors. Asking these questions will help you form an informed conclusion about how a facility holds themselves accountable.

The best senior living facilities are transparent and will disclose any pertinent information, no matter how damaging it is. But it’s always a good idea to double check. Go onto Google, Bing, BBB, and other sources to read reviews of past clients to make sure people have good things to say about all of your prospective senior care homes.

Question 4: What is your BBB rating?

The Better Business Bureau is one of the most trusted consumer resources in the world. They provide helpful information regarding complaints and lawsuits a business may have. This is especially important in the nursing home and senior care industry because your loved one’s health is at stake.

They also give ratings to local businesses, helping consumers to make excellent choices. Ask any prospective senior living facility about their BBB rating? If they don’t have one, ask why?

This is an essential question that can help you avoid any red flags in the future.
