Elderly people can be more susceptible to sickness and infection, so it's important to take some simple steps to help protect them. From eating a balanced diet to getting enough exercise, there are plenty of things you can do to give their immune system a boost.

Want to help keep your loved one healthy this winter? Check out our top tips for boosting their immune system.

Stop Smoking

One of the best things you can do for your loved one's health is to help them quit smoking. Smoking not only increases their risk of cancer and other diseases, it also weakens their immune system.

If they're struggling to quit on their own, offer to support them through the process. There are plenty of resources available, such as nicotine patches or gum, and there are also many support groups available online or in person.

Stay Hydrated

A healthy person needs to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. But when you're older, your body tends to become less efficient at retaining water, which can put you at risk of dehydration. That's why it's important for elderly people to get enough fluids throughout the day.

You should also make sure they stay hydrated while they're sleeping by keeping a glass of water on their bedside table. If they wear dentures, encourage them to remove them before going to sleep so that their mouth can breathe and moisture can be restored at night.

Encourage Regular Exercise

Even if your loved one has health issues or limited mobility, there are plenty of exercises that are safe and suitable for seniors! Walking is one of the best low-impact exercises, and most people can enjoy a walk around their home or local area.

Encourage them to do this every day if possible, even a short walk when they wake up in the morning will help to get their blood flowing.

Another great option for seniors is swimming. Many local pools offer senior classes for those with mobility issues. This is not only great exercise but also very relaxing. Plus, it's much easier than walking on land as all joints are supported by water (i.e., no impact). Walking isn't just good for your mind either. Studies have shown that regular physical activity reduces stress levels and improves moods too.

Encourage Them To Eat A Balanced Diet

Eating a balanced diet is important for everyone, but it can be especially important in elderly people who might not get all of their nutrients from food alone. As we age, our bodies lose the ability to absorb vitamin B12 and other essential vitamins at an efficient rate.

To help your loved one eat a balanced diet that contains enough nutrients, encourage them to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables each day (at least five servings). They should also limit how much fat they consume by avoiding fried foods or high-fat meats like bacon.

If you're concerned about whether or not they're getting enough nutrients from food alone, talk with their doctor about taking supplements.

As you can see, there are several ways to boost your loved one's immune systems and improve their overall health. If you're in need of extra help, make sure to give us a call today to schedule an appointment. We would be happy to chat about senior care options if and when the time comes.
